Virtual discussions of our exhibitions are one of many new ways of learning about art while staying home. On February 4, the museum live-streamed a virtual discussion of the exhibition “Emma Amos: Color Odyssey.”
For over 20 years, the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia has hosted a senior outreach program, in which senior centers from Athens-Clarke and nearby counties participate in a series of three workshops during which they look at, talk about and make art. This year, the COVID-19 pandemic required some changes to meet social distancing requirements for a very vulnerable population.
Normally, we’d be organizing a film festival related to the exhibition “The Art of Seating: 200 Years of American Design,” but since we can’t do that at the moment, museum education intern Katie Landers put together one you can experience in your own home.
The exhibition “The Art of Seating: 200 Years of American Design,” on view at the Georgia Museum of Art through January 3, features 40 exquisite chairs from the past 200 years. They function as seats but also as works of art. In celebration of this exhibition and UGA’s Spotlight on the Arts, the museum invites you to participate in a newspaper chair design contest. All ages are encouraged to enter.
This year’s annual meeting of the Friends of the Georgia Museum of Art presented the M. Smith Griffith Volunteer of the Year Award to Jean Petrovs and voted in six new Friends board members.
When Alfred Heber Holbrook donated 100 works of art to establish the Georgia Museum of Art in 1945, he did so with the desire to share art with everyone. In keeping with Holbrook's vision, the museum will host a virtual Family Day on Saturday, July 18, 2020.

The University of Georgia's annual Spotlight on the Arts festival returns for its eighth year with dozens of exhibitions and performances in the visual, literary and performing arts November 6 – 17.
Ever wanted the fun of our monthly Family Days but on a weekday afternoon? The Georgia Museum of Art is offering a new monthly after-school program, Art Cart (After Class) for the whole family. The program is designed to offer some creative exploration in between school hours and dinner time. It takes place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. one Wednesday a month, and participants can drop in at a time that works for them during those 90 minutes.
On Saturday, July 13, museum visitors will be able to participate in the first ever “Art Heist at the Museum” event, an interactive experience to test out their sleuthing skills and win prizes.
