Museum Offers Free Teacher Packets for Download

When the museum staff learned that we would be closing our building due to COVID-19 concerns, we immediately started thinking about new resources we could provide to help everyone disrupted by these changes. How could we do virtual tours? Could we present exhibitions online? Were there easy ways to present scheduled lectures through Facebook? We're still thinking over the answers to those questions and will have answers soon, but we also already have some resources that are available to you for free, including fantastic teacher packets that our education staff has developed over the years. If you're still scrambling for things to keep your children stimulated and learning, these packets contain a wide variety of suggested activities related to works of art and geared to Georgia Performance Standards for grades K through 12. Some focus on our permanent collection:

  Others were inspired by temporary exhibitions but still work for this purpose:

• “Icon of Modernism: Representing the Brooklyn Bridge 1883 – 1950” (K - 12)
• “Art Interrupted: Advancing American Art and the Politics of Cultural Diplomacy” (K - 12)
• “The American Scene on Paper: Prints and Drawings from the Schoen Collection” (K - 12)
• “Lord Love You: Works by R.A. Miller from the Mullis Collection” (K - 12)

  Each packet is a little different. Not all of them include lesson plans, but some do. All activities are adaptable to materials you might have on hand. In addition, not all of the lessons focus on art. There are language arts, science, technology, engineering and history lessons/activities, too, as well as glossaries and links to other online resources. Feel free to use these packets as a jumping-off point to supplement whatever distance learning you are already working on.
