Film Screenings

The Georgia Museum of Art offers a variety of films and film series throughout the year in the M. Smith Griffith Auditorium, including the annual España en Corto: Spanish Short Film Festival. Documentaries and feature-length films provide historical and cultural context for exhibitions. Janice Simon, Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Associate Professor in Art, has organized series on the directors Ingmar Bergman and Alfred Hitchcock and avant-garde short films. Senior Outreach Program

In the spring, senior centers from nearby counties participate in a series of three workshops where they look at, talk about and make art together. This three-part program has been developed and facilitated by Diane Barret, Ed.D., and museum staff for more than 20 years. Before visiting the museum, senior citizens in nearby counties first participate in a pre-visit at their center that introduces the works of art and builds community. A museum visit includes an interactive tour of a special exhibition, and during a post-visit meeting at the senior center, participants create works of art inspired by the exhibition at the museum and talk about their experience. Workshops and Studio Classes

Throughout the year, the museum offers a variety of workshops and classes featuring hands-on projects and activities for learners of all ages. Offered three times a year, Studio Workshop encourages adult learners to connect to the museum’s collection and special exhibitions through their own studio art-making practice. This program is led by Athens-area teaching artists and is open to all levels of experience, from novice beginners to advanced practitioners. Each four-week workshop meets on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and features a different topic. Past workshops have focused on printmaking, drawing basics, watercolor and gouache, fiber arts and more. Other workshops are offered on special topics at select times throughout the year.
