School and Teacher Programs
The Georgia Museum of Art offers extensive options for pre-K – 12 student and teacher audiences. The pre-K – 12 tour program features guided and self-guided tours that can include an art-making activity and are customizable for any group. Museum educators support teachers with a variety of professional development opportunities and content resources. Pre-K – 12 Tours
For the foreseeable future, the museum will offer virtual tours led by education staff, self-guided visits, or a hybrid tour model with a combination of virtual and self-guided experiences. Available tour options are subject to change as the state, University and CDC guidelines change. We will work with you to determine the best tour format for your group.
Tour requests must be made at least 2 weeks in advance, are based on schedule availability, and are limited to groups of 5 or more. To learn more about tour offerings, please contact the education department at gmoa-tours@uga.edu or request a tour online.
Teacher Professional Development and Workshops
Education staff will work with you to develop a tailored professional development workshop that meets the classroom needs of pre-K – 12 educators in disciplines including visual art, STEAM, social studies, literacy and more.
Education department staff work one-on-one with teachers to customize in-class lessons and supplementary content. We can collaborate with teachers from an entire grade or discipline (at the museum or at a school site) for an extended 90-minute professional development workshop. All teacher resources and professional development workshops are free of charge.
Museum Resource Orientation
The museum can provide a meeting space for your group in the museum’s Education Center with A/V support (for up to 4 hours). A museum education staff member will provide a short overview of museum programming and resources and lead a quick activity as part of a 30-minute introduction. Groups will also have access to the galleries. To book a space for your meeting and orientation, email ehogrefe@uga.edu.
Teacher Workshops
A Georgia Museum of Art teacher professional development workshop can take place at the museum or at your school. Workshops invite educators to tour an exhibition or preview selected works of art, participate in guided activities and work with museum education staff to generate in-class activities and tailored lesson plans that effectively bring art into the classroom or prepare their class for a trip to the museum. Previous teacher workshop topics have included: Incorporating Art into Any Classroom, 2nd Grade STEAM and How to Talk with PreK Students About Art. Teacher Resources
The Louis T. Griffith Teacher Resource Center offers a variety of educational materials for use in the classroom, including digital museum-published teacher packets and museum-published catalogues. Whether you are preparing a group for a museum visit, developing a follow-up lesson, or unable to visit the museum at all, we can share relevant materials or create something specifically for you. Adopt-a-Bus
The Georgia Museum of Art is committed to reducing transportation costs for schools visiting the museum from outside Athens-Clarke County and across Georgia. Adopt-a-Bus provides funding for bus transportation from pre-K – 12 schools across Georgia to the museum. Schools interested in using Adopt-a-Bus funds for transportation should contact the museum at ehogrefe@uga.edu.
Through Adopt-a-Bus, you can provide funding for bus transportation to the museum for school groups outside Athens-Clarke County. Your gift of $250 will underwrite one or more bus trips to the Georgia Museum of Art and is entirely tax-deductible. The museum will acknowledge your support of Adopt-a-Bus in its quarterly newsletter. Individuals wishing to donate more to the program should contact the museum at 706.542.4662.
